- Synopsis
- MAN DOWN Hardy hurled himself sideways and felt the wind of passing lead. A slug burned a streak along his ribs. He jerked his guns and shot with both hands as fast as he could pull the trigger. Answering shots streaked lances of light through the gloom. The building rocked to the roar of the reports. Ducking, weaving, trying to keep out of a direct line with the open door, Hardy fired again and again. He heard a coughing grunt, then the thud of a falling body. And at the same instant, Cliff Hardy's head seemed to explode in one vast burst of fire and pain. He felt himself falling and clutched at the wall for support. Instinctively his fingers tightened on the triggers of his sagging guns. One boomed a last shot. The other clicked on an empty shell. Hardy was sliding down the wall, clawing vainly at the smooth surface. His guns clattered to the floor and he sank beside them in a motionless heap.
