Synopsis: [From the inside book flap:] "Mandy McPherson was nine when her father was killed in an accident, and the fact of his death was too painful and sudden for her to be able to recognize or accept. To help both of them face life alone, Mandy's mother, Anne, rented a house for them in Kenton, Vermont, where she had been happy as a child. It seemed strange to be in a new place, with new people, after such a tremendous and painful change in their lives, but the strangeness soon wore off. Mandy met Carrie, a girl her own age, and Shandee, the village recluse, who gradually become her close friends. Anne, too, made a life for herself: her job on the local paper brought her increasingly closer to Martin Wechsler, the editor, a relationship about which Mandy at first had mixed feelings. By the end of summer, Mandy and Anne came to realize that Kenton had really become home. Their first Christmas there, with their new friends, was happy, though tinged with sadness and old memories. It wasn't until the anniversary of her father's death that Mandy found a way to mark his going, and she and Anne realized that, although they would never forget the past, they had begun a new life. This is a warm and touching story, which will have special meaning for all young readers who have ever faced change."
