- Synopsis
- During a long winter ten young girls, one after another, began having "visions"--seeing the devil--and thrashing about in wild outbursts and convulsions. After a hasty investigation, the town elders concluded that these "poor possessed children" were under a dreaded, evil influence... witches! The narrator of this often frightening tale, based on historical fact, is Mary Warren, a bound girl and one of the ten "possessed." In her vivid account she tells of the seemingly uncontrollable sequence of events, of which she was a part, leading to the now-infamous Salem witch-hunt and trials of 1692--and of how fear and imagination run wild brought an ending no one ever expected.
