- Synopsis
- In one of his autobiographical writings Simenon confesses that a temptation into which he might easily have fallen was to drop out of society, cut loose his moorings from family and friends, and lead the life of a vagrant. His sympathy with these outsiders is obviously shared by Maigret, who is shocked to find a bum--notoriously the most harmless and least aggressive specimen of humanity--a victim of an assassination attempt. Two mysteries confront him: Who is this man living under a Seine bridge in Paris? Why should anyone wish to do away with him? Maigret unravels both mysteries, but the victim, in the end, keeps the upper hand. The society.he has dropped out of includes the workings of justice. Maigret, though foiled, understands.
