- Synopsis
- Vanishing Point is set in Brasilia some ten years after its inauguration. By that time it was beginning to take on the accoutrements of an urban center: malls, shopping centers, restaurants, bars, nightclubs, athletic clubs, two universities, and even some of the underbelly of any city--prostitution, hustling, criminality. Well-heeled politicians continued doing what they had always done--flying into Brasilia for business and then returning to Rio, Sao Paulo, or a dozen other sophisticated home cities. But the regular folks, the bureaucrats, the professors, the business people, even politicians' family members, were stuck there building a middle-class life in a rather forlorn environment, lacking most of what they had left behind in their robust urban centers that hug the coastline. In Vanishing Point we come to know a small group of such society-builders, most of whom happen to be gay or lesbian, either in or out of the closet. If social life was difficult for the majority population, imagine what it was like for the LCBT crowd: seeking out partners, finding meeting points, trying to keep secrets in a prejudiced and relatively closed, small cosmos.
