- Synopsis
- Britain is struggling to retain one of its jewels, Malaya. The locals want independence. And there is another issue demanding attention: communist insurgency to oust the British. Emergency Rule is imposed and civil liberties curtailed. Peter Finney, a Cambridge University academic is recruited by the British Government to help develop a constitution for Malaya. He arrives in Kuala Lumpur in 1955 at a tumultuous time with insurgency at its peak. He becomes embroiled in a series of action-packed adventures, including dangerous encounters with communist terrorists. But this is merely the background to a potpourri of people, places and snippets of everyday life in Malaya, seen through the eyes of this young English civil servant. Kuala Lumpur is where Peter's social life is and the hub of that social life is the KL Savoy, a quaint pub-cum-restaurant. He strikes up friendships with British expatriates and locals, including the Savoy's owner, Joseph Heng. He also cultivates a relationship with Mei-Ling, a multi-talented young woman. There are startling disclosures, soul searching and decision-making. Will Peter overcome his indecisive nature and win over Mei-Ling? Or will he opt for a quiet life in England?
