Reviews on the net vary greatly about this book--some claiming it is below Holt's usual caliber. I find it one of her best. Characters are vivid and compelling, the plot full of drama. Kerensa had one dream: to be mistress of `the Abbas` the st. Larnston mansion. to this end, she will do whatever it takes. her wise granny told her anything could be achieved in life if you wanted it hard enough and were willing to pay the price. And Kerensa pays. Her life is interwoven with those of the aloof Justin, brash and headstrong John, sweet and humorous Kim, and, especially with Mellyora, the parson's daughter, who shows so much more spirit than one would expect from her gentle ways. Kerensa is a flawed yet likable heroine.
