- Synopsis
- This book is centered at theforefront of an interdisciplinary subject: multifunctional magnetic microwiresand their composites and applications. After introducing general background information and progress made in thisexciting field, the book describes techniques for the fabrication of magnetic microwires and theirrelationships to microwirestructures and properties. Theauthor places particular emphasis on the so-called giantmagnetoimpedance (GMI) effect discovered in these microwires - which is the foundation for developinghigh-performance magnetic sensors - and presents asystematic treatment of the theoretical and experimental aspects of the GMIeffect. Accordingly, the key criteria for selecting suitable magnetic microwiresare defined, thus providingexcellent guidance onoptimizing the GMI response in existing materials, as well as developing newmaterials with improved GMI properties for present and future sensor deviceapplications. This is followed by a detailed description of different types ofGMI sensors and their potential applications. As a logical transition fromsingle components to composite materials, the remaining part of the bookdescribes how ferromagnetic microwires can be incorporated into a polymer matrixto create a new class of composite materials with a wide range of functionalities for sensor andmicrowave device applications. Readersare shown state-of-the-artfabrication methods; microwave tunable properties, absorption andshielding behaviors; and the metamaterial characteristics of these newlydeveloped composites. Lastly,the author takes a critical approach to suggesting potentialapplications for thesemicrowire-based composite materials so as to pinpoint the most promising perspectives,current challenges andpossible solutions.
