- Não pode haver luz sem a escuridão. O sol não pode nascer sem que a noite o anteceda e o sol poente do dia deve inevitavelmente se esvair na escuridão. Se a vida fosse só flores e o raiar do sol, não haveria contraste. O brilho do sol perpétuo seria igualmente cegante e devastador. Nós precisamos da escuridão. É uma parte integral do todo. Parte de nós. Histórias de terror são um reflexo do nosso lado sombrio. Em uma era de terrores muito reais, como A.I.D.S, câncer e terrorismo, histórias que nos assustam podem desempenhar uma função útil ao permitir que os leitores experimentem e vivenciem o medo de forma controlada, lidando com o horror em seus próprios termos. Ela nos providencia com uma fuga catártica sem nos oprimir com mais do que somos capazes de lidar. Vezes demais nós evitamos nosso lado sombrio na esperança de que, se não o virmos, ele não existirá. Porém, nos dê um Ed Gein, Charlie Manson, Ted Bundy, Hannibal Lecter, Jeffrey Dahmer ou qualquer outro exemplo sanguinolento do lado sombrio da natureza humana e expressamos um fascínio mórbido que beira o frenético. Não podemos evitar desacelerar na autoestrada para podermos ver a carnificina de outra morte precoce e violenta, ou dar aquela espiadela cheia de culpa no infortúnio ou na deformidade de outrem. Nós simplesmente temos que olhar.
