Synopsis: The author has made the study of emotion his life work, and in this book he draws together more than thirty years of study to examine the wide range of human emotions. He emphasizes that facial expressions are universal, and explains the precise muscle movements that appear with sadness, anger, surprise, disgust, and other feelings. He suggests that making a particular facial expression can actually trigger the feeling which that expression represents. Ekman believes that a clearer understanding of the components and expression of feelings can enhance our communications and help us to build healthier relationships.
