- Thisbook argues that Italy represents a privileged entry point into thecomparative analysis of ideologies and experiences of modernity. Thebook compares how thinkers and politicians belonging to differentideological clusters - Liberalism, Communism, Fascism, Chistian Democracy -came to formulate multiple and often antagonistic visions of Italy's road tothe modern. By revisiting Italianpolitical history from the late nineteenth century until the present with afocus on transition periods, Italian Modernities explores how competing historicalnarratives influencedshifting understandings of Italian nationhood, thus foregrounding the activerole of memory politics in the formulation of multiple modernities.
