- Synopsis

This is a love story about Helen, a 34-year old school teacher. For the last twelve years Helen has been taking care of her crabby widowed father. Until his recent death, she has not been able to travel.
Helen's younger sister, Rosemary, has invited Helen to join her, her husband, and two children for a holiday in Saint-Tombe, France. Helen has always wanted to travel, so she accepts the invitation.
As she drives through England and into France, she doesn't notice two men watching her and her car. Her plans for a nice peaceful holiday are shattered when a young hitchhiker asks for a ride and won't accept no as an answer. Her first night at Saint-Tombe, while she is babysitting her niece and nephew, a cloth is placed over her head and pressed into her mouth and nostrils. She faints. Her brother-in-law tells the police she is hysterical and that she was not attacked. She meets a French mechanic (Paul Pennard) who shows up unexpectedly (well, he does live in Saint-Tombe...). She is accosted on the beach, invited to dinner at a gangsters' house, and witnesses a murder. After witnessing the murder, she and Paul are taken to a cellar to wait to be killed. Faced with what could be death, Helen is compelled to make some serious personal decisions.
