- Synopsis
- Suzuki (East Asian Languages and Cultures, Indiana University) looks at the works of three pre-war Japanese women writers in order to investigate the role of love in Japanese culture during the first half of the 20th century. The author interprets women's fiction along with with nonfiction from a range of media, including early feminist writing, sexology books, newspapers, and bestselling love treatises, showing how the concept of "woman" was constructed through the modern experience of love. Suzuki also explores the historical and ideological shifts of the period, underscoring the broader connections between gender, modernity, and nationhood.
