- Synopsis
- The April 2005 Minuteman Project, in which vigilantes from the US patrolled the border with Mexico, and the mass rallies of Latinos in many US cities during the spring of 2006, says Chavez (anthropology, U. of California-Irvine), were both elements in an ongoing debate about immigration, the meaning of citizenship, and the power of media spectacles. He discovers a narrative that Latinos, unlike previous immigrants, are unwilling or incapable of integrating into US life, and are devoted to reconquering the southwest of the country that was stolen from them and destroying the American way of life.
