- Synopsis
- The emergence of post-structuralism and postmodernism within social theory has challenged many of the fundamentals of modernist social science. The emphasis which these approaches place on language, firstly as the unavoidable mediator between an object of study and a description of that object, and secondly as something which is profoundly unstable, marks the broadest of these challenges -- to the possibility that sociology and the other human sciences might achieve rational knowledge of the world.
