Synopsis: It is the year of the most terrible flood in the history of the Mississippi, and five animals have climbed onto a small flood mound built by neighboring farmers to save their horses and cattle. The animals are Doc Raccoon, later the Mayor of Catfish Bend; Judge Black, the motto-quoting black snake who has become a vegetarian to clear the snake family's bad name; J.C., the sporty, fast-talking red-haired fox from Memphis; the silly rabbit; and the gloomy frog, whose only joy is directing the Indian Bayou Frog Glee Club. The black snake, when his lower nature grips him, is tempted to eat the frog; the fox is hungry for the rabbit. Unlike most warring humanity, they suddenly realize that if they are to survive, they must unite against the common enemy, the flood. With the high water over at last, they set out for New Orleans to demand that the riverbanks be made safe for wild animals. The strange and perilous adventures that befall them reveal that animals have much the same problems these days as human beings.
