Synopsis
In 1956, at the height of the civil rights era, the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission was created to counter the movement for racial integration. Bowers, a career journalist, chronicles 10 years of the commission's propaganda campaigns, bribery, and its collection of files on 87,000 citizens and organizations including freedom riders and protest marchers. In addition to the commission's archives (opened in 1998), the author draws on interviews with protesters, the personal papers of state's elected leaders, and articles from the period. The book's accessible language, short chapters, and eye-friendly layout will appeal to all ages of general readers and students in high school and up.
