- Synopsis
- All the naked soldiers were dead and dying. Only the one upriver was unscathed, and he was firing his pistol. Once, twice, three times the gun fired. The enemy pistol exploded a fourth and fifth time at others, then the soldier aimed it at Crow Feather. Crow Feather gritted his teeth and nudged his mount with alternating knees so the horse followed a crooked path toward the soldier. Bang! Crow Feather smiled. The sixth shot had missed. Now he would count coup upon the soldier. Feats of bravery were many among the Comanche, but not even killing and scalping an enemy warrior could compare with touching a live enemy. Crow Feather charged the soldier. He was a brave man, for he did not run.... The soldier never flinched, even though he was almost a dead man. Behind the bluecoat, Crow Feather saw the warriors of his band watching. Crow feather saw no fear in his enemy's eyes. He saw only courage. The two men stared at each other. Then Crow Feather screamed. Instantly the warriors who weren't taking scalps converged on the brave soldier. Five warriors jumped from their horses and swarmed to him. "What shall we do with him?" Gives Gifts asked. "Stake him to the ground," Crow Feather said. "Later we shall torture him."
