The Boggart and the Monster (The Boggart #2)
By:
- Synopsis
- The Boggart and the Monster, a sequel to The Boggart, is a clever and lively 200 page fantasy for children written by the highly acclaimed and award winning novelist Susan Cooper and first published in 1997. The Boggart, a mischievous shape-shifting spirit has lived in the Scottish castle for centuries. FIn this novel, the Canadian children Emily and Jessup return to Scotland for an adventure, joining their old friend Tommy and Mr. Maconochie, the new owner of Castle Keep, on a trip to Loch Ness, where a new expedition is determined to find the fabled monster. Of course, the fun-loving Boggart comes along for the ride, and wherever the Boggart goes, things are bound to get lively. But this time, the Boggart has a serious mission. His cousin Nessie is trapped in the monster shape he assumed long ago, and it's up to the Boggart to keep Nessie from being discovered by the expedition's high-tech equipment. Is modern science any match for the Boggart's ancient magic? The novel has received a warm reception. The New York Times Book Review characterizes the narrative as "Swiftly plotted and densely populated, zipping along with the speed of a video game." * Another review points out the significance of the conception and the style: "Cooper adroitly incorporates ancient lore into a contemporary setting while producing an imaginative and compelling tale."

Castle Keep has been sold to a retired lawyer named Mr. Maconochie. The children who were related to Devon MacDevon, the former owner to Castle Keep, come to visit. The children and Mr. Maconochie took a trip to Loch Ness, and The boggart of Castle Keep went with them. When the Boggart was there he found that his cousin Nessie was trapped in the form of a monster, all the way at the bottom of Loch Ness. With the help of Mr. Maconochie and the children the Boggart is able to rescue Nessie, and take him to live in Castle Keep. I like this book because it shows another side of the Boggart that hadn’t been shown before.
