- Synopsis
- Sidney, at the age of twelve, is short and pencil-thin, and his head is round and much too large for his body. His red hair stands straight up in a long crew cut. His complexion is perpetually flushed. A cantaloupe is what usually comes to mind. That his full name is Sidney T. Mellon, Junior, makes his appearance a nasty cosmic joke, with him as the punch line. What chance does Sidney have looking like this, yo-yoing back an forth between Seattle and Los Angeles living part-time with each of his divorced parents? No wonder he gets on a bus in Los Angeles one day and heads for New York City, "as far away as he could think to get." On his diesel-powered adventure across America, Sidney has a habit of telling wild stories about himself when he talks to strangers. Protected by these hilarious disguises, driven by desperation, he is all the more open to learning who he really is--and what he can do about the unhappiness in his life--from the people he meets and the experiences he has along the way.
