"Comencé rindiendo vasallaje a Walter Scott, Alejandro Dumas y Víctor Hugo; pero me aficioné después con mayor vehemencia a Balzac y a Jorge Sand, por hallarlos más profundos y sensibles; y primeras resultas (muy desmedradas, como fruto de mi pobre imaginación) de tantas y tan diferentes influencias fueron El Clavo, El Amigo de la Muerte, Buena pesca, El Extranjero, El Asistente, La Buenaventura, Fin de una novela, El Rey se divierte, Dos retratos y Los ojos negros. -Hoy creo discernir que en estos ensayos predomina la influencia de Alejandro Dumas (siempre me refiero al padre).
