- Synopsis
- Hiero Desteen is a 530 page science fictionwork written by Sterling E. Lanier. It contains two novels, hiero's Journey, first published in 1973, and The Unforsaken Hiero, published in 1983. Nelson Doubleday's summary reads as follows: Welcome to North America, 5,000 years after The Death. The ruins of the civilized world are overgrown with post-holocaust forest and deadly desert wasteland. The five Great Lakes have merged to form a vast Inland Sea. Evolution has remodeled much of the plant and animal kingdoms. In what was once the Canadian West, the small Metz Republic, led by the scholar-priests of the Abbeys, is struggling to recapture the glow of knowledge, order and civilization. But the savage forces of the Brotherhood of the Unclean seem determined to crush anything that stands in the way of its evil plans for domination. The Most Reverend Abbot Kulase Demero believes there is hope for the outnumbered Metz-but it depends on a long-lost secret that must be recovered from deep in dangerous Brotherhood territory. And if anyone can bring it back, it is bold Per Hiero Desteen, telepath, warrior and priest. Hiero's journey chronicles the warrior-priest's daring quest. Setting forth on Klootz, his telepathically controlled mount, Hiero is soon joined by Gorm, an intelligent bear... by Luchare, a beautiful, dark-skinned princess whom Hiero has rescued from torturers ... by Brother Aldo, a mysterious ''Elevener"... and by, among others, the strange Captain Gimp. Hiero and his companions face peril at every turn. But nothing can prepare them for the surprise that awaits them at their destination. The Unforsaken Hiero scatters the band of compatriots across the face of the continent. Hiero, who journeys wit!h Luchare to her troubled homeland of D'alwah, will face capture by the Unclean, death by dehydration in the Deserts of Death, murderous mutated animals, and the most devastating terror of all-loss of his unparallelled mental powers. Hiero and his allies will be tested to the very limits of their abilities. But they are bolstered by a fierce determination to defeat the Unclean. It is that determination upon which their survival depends ... and which may bring victory in their ultimate confrontation with the Unclean.
