- Triego, un campesino cansado de la larga guerra, cría un escarabajo gigante para que una vez que sea grande, poder volar con él hacia la morada de los dioses y pedirles la paz. Pero los dioses se han cansado de las guerras de los hombres y se ha ido del Olimpo, donde sólo ha quedado Pólemos (la Guerra) que ha encerrado a Irene (La Paz). Pólemos pretende destruir todas las ciudades griegas, así que Triego, junto con Hermes (Mercurio) intentan liberar a Irene de la caverna donde ha sido encerrada, y también intentan liberar a Opora (abundancia) y Teoría (El Placer de la Fiesta). En la liberación contribuyenademás campesinos del ática que conforman el coro de la comedia. Aristófanes retoma el tema del pacifismo, en una comedia plagada de contradicciones y antítesis como es el realismo de los personajes humanos que, a su vez, realizan acciones tan disparatadas como alimentar un escarabajo gigante para volar hasta el Olimpo, o los personajes abstractos y dioses. Aristófanes es el comediógrafo crítico y ateo al que poco le importa que algunas de sus obras sean una desmitificación que raya en lo sacrílego o una dura crítica a los sofistas, o al poder y a la guerra, por lo que llegó a ser el punto de mira de la indignación de algunos personajes de su época.
