- En una época en que la cuestión de lo moderno y la modernidad aparece como preocupación central de los gobiernos y de los debates acerca del desarrollo en América Latina, el presente libro aborda el origen de la modernidad en Europa, continente en que se inaugura un pensamiento de alcance universal, al que se asocia la emergencia del nuevo mundo. En este sentido, el autor destaca la relevancia de las estructuras que determinan el sistema feudal europeo y la cosmovisión medieval, pues en su evolución se sitúan la expansión europea, el desarrollo del sistema capitalista y el surgimiento de la era renacentista, cuando el pensamiento adquiere una dimensión universal y la civilización se acoge a la modernidad. Maquiavelo, padre de la teoría del Estado moderno, Colón el descubridor y Cortés el conquistador, simbolizan algunos aspectos de este proceso; los dos últimos son, además, artífices del ingreso del nuevo mundo a la Era Moderna. Herbert Frey (1949, Viena, Austria) es doctor en filosofía por la Universidad de Viena con la tesis La génesis del nihilismo en Friedrich Nietzsche (1975). Doctorado de Estado en Ciencias Políticas (habilitación) por la Universidad de Hannover (Alemania) con la venia: Relaciones interculturales Europa América Latina (1988). Es autor de los libros: La feudalidad europea y el régimen señorial español (INAH, 1988, 1993); Die Entdeckung Amerikas und die Entstehung der Moderne (Peter Lang, 2000); Nietzsche, Eros y Occidente, la crítica nietzscheana a la tradición occiden-tal (2001); además es coordinador de los libros: La muerte de Dios y el fin de la metafísica (UNAM, 1997) y La genealogía del cristianismo. ¿Origen de Occidente? (CNCA, 2000). A partir de 1978 es profesor de la Escuela Nacional de Antropología e Historia, y desde 1992 es investigador del Instituto de Investigaciones Sociales de la UNAM e imparte cátedra de posgrado en la FCPYS y en la FFYL.
