- La República es quizá la obra mas significativa de Platón. Escrita en forma de diálogos, en los que intervienen Sócrates y varios discípulos y parientes, nos presenta toda una organización y filosofía del Estado ideal. Respública equivale a gobierno de los súbditos. El esquema de Platón tiene algunos puntos clave: el ejercicio pleno de la justicia como norma moral; la educación de los guerreros como defensores del Estado; la concesión de la propiedad limitada, pero la formación de los hijos en asilos estatales, para conseguir que todos los padres consideren a los hijos de la comunidad como propios; el rechazo de la molicie y de la grosería como formas corruptoras... En este planteamiento utópico, el Estado es el supremo árbitro de sus súbditos y el gobierno deben ejercerlo los filósofos, porque ellos saben ver el bien, la belleza y la justicia.
