Marinero frustrado, Verne vivió con la imaginación las más intrépidas aventuras, o mejor dicho, les hizo vivir, a sus personajes, las hazañas que el mismo hubiera querido realizar. Muestra de ello son los textos "Un Capitán de 15 años", "Dos años de vacaciones" o "El Castillo de los Carpatos" y hasta el mismo "Miguel Strogoff".
Julio Verne viajó con la imaginación en el tiempo y en el espacio llegando a lugares que aún 150 años después no fueron descubiertos. Vio al hombre pisando
la Luna, anticipó los actuales submarinos, diseñó una suerte de metro, y creó la literatura científica. En "El faro del fin del mundo", la misión pacífica encomendada a los fareros Vázquez y Felipe en una isla aparentemente deshabitada, va a trastornarse por completo con la aparición de unos piratas sin escrúpulos que actuarán con inusitada violencia.
En el enfrentamiento que sigue -todo un símbolo de dos concepciones antagónicas del mundo- se debatirán la desesperada lucha por la libertad del cabecilla de los piratas, Kongre, y la tenacidad y heroísmo, de Vázquez, con quien se alían los elementos de la naturaleza y el implacable paso del tiempo. En esta novela, que destaca por su tono realista, Verne pasea nuestra mirada por una isla de los confines del mundo, a la que acude la acicateada imaginación del lector.
