- El poeta, ensayista y naturalista norteamericano Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) es conocido sobre todo por su obra Walden, el relato de los dos años que pasó viviendo en la cabaña que él mismo se construyó junto al lago Walden, en el corazón de los bosques de Massachusetts. Walden, verdadera oda a la naturaleza, se ha convertido en un clásico y en un texto precursor del ecologismo. Thoreau, agrimensor, naturalista, conferenciante y fabricante de lápices, es hoy considerado uno de los padres fundadores de la literatura norteamericana, en buena medida inaugura dos corrientes que alimentarán los caudales del pensamiento ecológico de siglo y medio más tarde. Thoreau se emboscó y nos convirtió en emboscados a muchos, en todos los continentes. El movimiento ecologista mundial, con unos veinte millones de vinculados, no se explica sin conocer raíces tan principales como la del ejemplo de Thoreau, y mucho menos, por supuesto, cuando hay que acordarse de los orígenes de la resistencia pasiva, la desobediencia civil sin violencia.
