- Synopsis
- A year in the life of a quirky and vulnerable New York woman is evoked in this wise and witty debut novel. When Chloe, her next to best friend, gives her a complete astrological reading for her birthday, Mary Forrest thinks, "Really, I'm a little disappointed. I was hoping for a Coach purse like she has or maybe something in cashmere. " Then she is told,"It's not gonna be an easy year, this Saturn Return. Every loose thread must be tied up now, or wait for the second return at fifty-six. A lot of strange things are going to happen. You'll see. " And Mary does. She has idolized her famous mother, a self-made literary eminence, from a distance; they talk on the telephone regularly, once a month. This year their relationship changes. She takes a leave of absence from the online service where she is a category book reviewer, reasoning, "The last thing I want to do is move up in this company. If writing about crap books is mind-numbing, what kind of a life would it be to manage writers who write about crap books?" She's been too fearful of abandoment to even speak to her former boyfriend. Now she agrees to help him look for an apartment and insists on giving him a haircut. Mary's life is on the ascendant. Funny and poignant, Mary is a quintessential New York heroine for the new millennium.
