- Synopsis
- Now, after more than a decade, R. M. Meluch returns to the science fiction firmament with the first novel in a fast-paced, action-packed military science fiction series that seriously wreaks havoc with space, time, and our concepts of reality. Set in the distant future, when Earth and her colony worlds have long been at war with the forces of the Palatine Empire-an offshoot Earth culture that bases its values, civilization, and military structure on those of the Roman Empire-R. M. Meluch introduces us to her universe at a pivotal moment in its history. Following the tenet that, "The enemy of my enemy is my ally," the forces of Earth and the Palatine have recently united in an uneasy and extremely fragile alliance against the Hive, the alien life-form that is swarming across the galaxy, literally devouring everything it encounters along the way. What this means for Captain Farragut, commander of the battleship class spaceship U.S. Merrimack, is that he is about to be loaned a new officer as part of his crew-a Roman "patterner" named Augustus, manipulated through bioengineering to be something more than human. Just before they acquire Augustus, the crew of U.S. Merrimack stumble across a still-active signal buoy at a far-distant globular cluster. And, against all odds, within the cluster they discover three colonized worlds known as the Myriad, which the Hive have apparently overlooked. Even Augustus can't foresee all of the perils that will await them when they make contact with the local humanoids, who are obviously not native to these worlds but have colonized them at some point in the past. Due certainly at least in part to the Merrimack's very presence in the system, paradox begins to flow into paradox almost too fast for even the genetically and cybernetically enhanced patterner to follow. And as the Hive closes in on both the Merrimack and the ships of the Palatine Empire-it becomes critical to unravel the mystery of the Myriad. For the price of failure may be the destruction of not only the Myriad, but of Earth.and Palatine as well....
