- Dona e Itziar (Deva), las mujeres con quienes el protagonista de esta novela mantiene una relación ardiente, cruda y extrema, son los dos principios de la existencia. La acción se desarrolla dentro de 40 años, en una Europa confederal, de régimen presidencialista. En España reina todavía un anciano rey, gracias al cual se mantiene cierta cohesión formal entre los pueblos que la forman. La República Independiente de Euskadi pone en marcha una experiencia: la gestión privada de gobierno. Y en el resto del mundo se desata un enfrentamiento entre los poderes mediáticos de la tierra, a propósito del restablecimiento de la pena de muerte en Europa. Un periodista "free-lance", en su intento de penetrar en las claves del problema, se ve llevado a otra época, cuarenta años anterior, cuando comenzaron a fraguarse las ideas y valores de su tiempo.
