- Synopsis
- From Children's Literature written by Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz The timeless tale of the arrival of a new baby in the family is told with a different twist, as a young girl writes to her grandma. Her letter is filled with news of her cat, Stripe, who has developed "a big belly" and is no longer afraid of the neighbor's dog. Finally Stripe becomes restless, settles in the box made for her, and has five "very cute" little "stripes." As the brief text goes along the double pages following the activities of the cat, an additional visual story is being told as we see the mother, obviously pregnant as well, preparing a bassinet but ignored by the girl. Her final words to her grandma: "By the way, I also have a new baby brother" show her priorities. The spare text is accompanied by a minimal visual tale. Ink lines and transparent watercolors define only the main characters and a few props set against the white pages. The warm, happy scenes draw us into the girl's happy acceptance of the natural events. School Library Journal
