- Synopsis
- These stories, by the author of the classic "The Lady, or the Tiger?" are lively retellings of episodes from New Jersey history, from the colonial era to the age of steam travel. Although presented as fiction they are carefully researched, and Stockton lists his "authorities" for each tale. Stories include the adventures of John Honeyman, a spy for George Washington during the Revolutionary War; the tribulations of Penelope Stout, who survived alone in the forest after her husband was killed by Indians; and John Marshall, the New Jerseyan who discovered gold at Suter's Ford in California.
