- Synopsis
- There comes a time when you've got to let them go free or they'll never learn to look after themselves," old Mrs. Moffatt warned Aunt Hilda. And that was the start of Richie's freedom to roam the wild Scottish coast near the hotel where they were living, for until then Aunt Hilda had been afraid to let him go anywhere alone. Soon Richie found a "special place"--a cliff hidden by overhanging heather, from which he could watch an inlet that he liked to think of as a secret bay. One day, as he lay on top of the cliff, Richie saw an alarmingly long creature stretching out into the sea like a reef of rocks--"like a kind of giant lizard with the longest neck in the world," thought Richie--a silly, friendly smile on its face. This was Mungo, last and gentlest of the ancient sea monsters. Soon Richie learned that Mungo liked to eat sea greens and potato crisps; more important, he noticed that a certain "clong" sound from across the water summoned Mungo out to sea, toward the island of Muckle Craig. In one of Rosalie K. Fry's most entertaining stories, Mungo eventually takes Richie on the greatest adventure of his life.
