- Synopsis
- Journeys is a companion volume to Richard Lewis’ widely and warmly acclaimed anthol- ogy, Miracles: Poems by Children of the English-speaking World, published in 1966 (see back of jacket). Both collections are intended not as a sampling of precociousness but as a testament to the stunning range of artistry and vision which children demonstrate when given the unfettered opportunity to write. Here, in scores of extraordinary stories, essays, fantasies, descriptions, are the authentic and natural voices of children. The vigorous, uninhibited sense of language, the often startling choice of sound and image, the direct, intuitive thrust to the heart of the matter reveal the excitement, wonder and rich imaginative power through which children view the world and express their own emotions and ideas. The children, whose ages range from four to fourteen, come from an enormous variety of backgrounds in nine countries where English is spoken: the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, India, Ghana, Liberia, Great Britain and Ireland. With the assistance of UNESCO, and drawing upon the resources he developed during a year-long round-the-world tour and through his own continuing experience in the classroom, Richard Lewis collected more than 4,500 examples of prose by children and chose the very best for Journeys.
