- Synopsis
- Una novela de iniciación, donde el despertar vital de una adolescente siria se trenza con la difícil situación política de su país. Son las ocho de la tarde de un jueves cualquiera en Aleppo a principios de los años ochenta, y por las callejuelas de la ciudad desfilan cuatro mujeres que proceden de la misma casa, totalmente cubiertas por un velo negro y guiadas por un hombre ciego. Al mirarlas mientras andan como sonámbulas hacia los baños públicos, nadie diría que detrás de esta máscara oscura hay cuerpos con recuerdos y anhelos distintos, pero así es: Maryam, la mayor, anega en rezos el recuerdo de un amor que no fue; Marwa colecciona mariposas muertas y siente aun el olor del hombre que la enloqueció de deseo, y Safa piensa en las camisolas ligeras que vestía antes de marchar a Afganistán con su esposo y compartir con él una chabola de barro. Cierra la fila una joven sin nombre, que se alimenta de odio para definirse frente alos demás y aceptar que tanta renuncia al placer tiene un sentido. Es ella quien pone voz a esta historia, para recordar sus días de estudiante y activista en una lucha sin reglas claras, mientras los escuadrones de la muerte arrasaban las calles, sus años en la cárcel añorando el perfume de las especias y peleando por llevarse a la boca una manzana podrida, y finalmente el exilio en Inglaterra, un país sin colores y sin oídos. En las palabras de esta mujer sin nombre caben el pasado y el presente de Siria, una tierra que Khaleb Khalifa ama y describe con auténtico talento.
