- Synopsis
- Valentine Loring was, as her name implied, a most romantic person. Even the casual observer could see she was neatly built for it. Miss Loring was also--upon the testimony of her distracted parents and Bill Rogers, her long-suffering suitor--completely unpredictable. All things considered, the owner of "Ted Morrison's Bookshop... Old and Rare Books" should have bolted his door and retired to the cellar on that snowy fourteenth day of February when Miss Loring stepped into his shop in New York's East Fifties. Since most of Ted's customers were accustomed to go quietly out of his life after the usual exchange of cash for a volume, he had no idea of the havoc Miss Loring could wreak in the course of a simple business transaction. He was not unduly alarmed even when Miss Loring literally slid into his arms (she said she tripped) and emerged from the shop half an hour later owing him for the book--and her cab fare home. This was only the beginning. In a few short months Ted found himself possessed of an unwanted partner--namely Miss Loring, a sensational window display, a stock of books that wounded his sensitive literary taste, and incidentally a successful business. In his innocence, Ted could not help but be pleased until the realization dawned that he was no longer master of his own destiny either at home or in the shop. Val's unethical methods of impressing this important truth upon the mind of the hapless male and making him like it, form the nucleus for one of Faith Baldwin's most entertaining love stories.
