- Synopsis
- All the kids call the strange old woman Mad Mary, and they steer clear of her. But that doesn’t stop Brit from spying on her through the tall hedges that separate their houses. Spying takes Brit’s mind away from her family’s problems--her sister, who is often sick, her disabled dad, and their odd underground house, with its leaky roof that her parents can’t afford to fix. Then one day, while Brit is playing spy, she comes nose-to-nose with what looks like a bear! It’s actually a big lovable dog she calls Mischief. The more she gets to know him, the more Brit wishes Mischief could be her dog, but it looks as if Mad Mary wants to claim him, too. Is it possible for a dog to have two owners? Interest Ages 8 and up. Reading level: 3.2
