- Synopsis
- Alice and Albert Graves, a charming, civilized couple have retired to the country after Albert suffered two heart attacks. They read, garden, live quietly. The novel begins on the day a young man comes to repair the oil heater. Touched by a shy, poignant quality in him, they invite him to stay for dinner. Several weeks later they become aware that mysterious things are happening in their house-there are odd noises in this formerly quiet sanctuary, objects strangely disappear, and there is a sense of alarm in the air. And then they realize that Richard Atlee has secretly returned and taken up residence with them. Not in the house. But in their crawlspace-a dank, narrow area in the basement, between the foundations and the house. After that, nothing is ever the same
