Told in the first person, this is a detailed story of the physical and emotional difficulties 17-year-old Anna must struggle with as she recovers from a devastating automobile accident that, although she is alive and not paralyzed, destroys her dreams and her plans for her life. She does have a sense of humor which occasional lightens the storytelling. Since Anna is an Australian schoolgirl, another interesting facet of the book is the different vocabulary and customs. The school semesters, exams and seasonal activities are different, and I loved learning new words for things, such as "stick" for "cane" and "terrace house." The latter is also used in Lisa Kleypas' historical novels, but I didn't google the term until I read this book.Set in and originally published in Australia, the book has Australian, i.e., English as opposed to American, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
