- Synopsis
- "When I was a very young kitten, I had the misfortune to lose my mother and find myself alone in the world at the age of six weeks. However, I was not unduly disturbed by this, since I was intelligent, not ill favored, resourceful and full of confidence in myself." Thus begins this amazing manuscript which Paul Gallico found and translated from the Feline. It was not an autobiography, as it might seem, but rather a book of instructions for kittens, strays, and other homeless cats. Completely documented by the most superb photography of the "not ill favored" author, here is a guide telling cats how to win their way into a household, take over the family, and achieve control over each member of the family. Included are the details of how to select the family, what to look for, how to move in, how to establish total and unquestioned sovereignty over the most comfortable chair or sofa, how to obtain the food of one’s choice, how to treat visitors, how to conduct a romance, how to care for and train kittens, and just about everything else that a self-respecting cat would want to know in order to dominate the household. Although Cica, the author, meant this to be only a practical guide, she could not help including some gems of feline philosophy. After all, cats existed on this earth thousands of years before humans arrived. Who would be better equipped to comment on the foibles of human behavior? The comments are only an aside, however. Cica manages far better than most humans to stick to her point. With all her planning, Cica could not have selected a more sympathetic and understanding editor than Paul Gallico. After all, he had been taken over by seventeen cats! And unless Cica divulges the information at some future date, we will never know whether she deliberately posed for the 200 odd photographs by Suzanne Szasz or whether the photographer--as she thinks--did a completely natural, unposed documentary which serves so well to illustrate Cica’s Manual. The result--the most charming publication ever for cats and cat-lovers. Image descriptions added throughout the book.
