This is a very emotional book. The issue of control and or abuse under the guise of religion is treated in a sensitive nature. I liked the way love was exhibited toward some of the members of the FLDS, while unfair and corrupt experiences were exposed.
This book is current up to date “Now” with news reports as late as April 2008. That makes this book disturbing.
I had heard stories of these practices from former residents of Utah and Arizona, but it was hard to believe these things happened in America.
While some groups abuse members of their congregation, there are those who do not. Keeping the balance of respect, authority, subjection, dependence and trust sometimes may turn in to control and manipulation. That point is what makes this book so frightening for me. I have seen several instances of leaders insisting on too much authority over their congregations. I have also seen wonderful church leaders who daily put other people first with no other motive than trying to please God.
This book should be kept in context and not applied to people who worship in general. It does illustrate how control and cultism strategies are applied. On the scale of 1-5 it should be a 10. There are some references to forced sex and miscarriages are mentioned. The word rape is used occasionally in the chapters during the trial. Discretion when reading allowed with a screen reader should be used if young children are in the area.
