- Synopsis
- A bordo de un tren, Alan y Ralph se hacen amigos hasta el punto de contarse unos inquietantes secretos. ALAN es un representante reservado, frío y cínico, pero racional y resolutivo. Dice que es de Boston y que viaja en tren desde Nueva Orleans a Chicago por asuntos de negocios. RALPH, por otro lado, es un vendedor amigable y animado, pero, a menudo, indiscreto. A diferencia de su amigo, su vida está llena de sorpresas: esconde unos sorprendentes misterios, como la muerte de sus parejas. Primero, a su novia hippie la estrangulan en una playa en los años 70; después, su mujer se cae por un acantilado varios años después. Finalmente, una mujer a la que conoció y a la que deseaba aparece muerta. Por si fuera poco, Ralph sufre una severa amnesia que él asocia a un accidente de tráfico que ocurrió años antes. Ralph ha olvidado su verdadero nombre, que parece ser JERRY y no Ralph, y a la gente que conoce. Está desesperado por encontrar respuestas a los asesinatos de sus parejas. Alan propone resolver los problemas de Ralph empleando el raciocinio. Ralph confía en él y se lo cuenta todo, y los dos pasan toda la noche en el tren intercambiando ideas, aunque la memoria de Ralph parece seriamente afectada. Alan cree que el asesino podría ser alguien que odie a Ralph por alguna oscura razón y respalda su argumento demostrándole algunos conocimientos de psicología. La historia tiene un final estremecedor.
