- It's the mid 1970s when issues are still debated hotly on college campuses and drugs destroy lives and careers. But Grenelle is a small, lovely, liberal arts college and high Episcopal seminary. A holy relic is stolen and controversy, even hatred is flashing between the priests and tearing the college apart. Susan's heart was broken and she fled the school 12 years ago when her fiancé Mark, ended their engagement almost the instant he met her twin sister who was always favored by their father. Her father and sister are dead and Susan has moved back to Grenelle. She's the dean's secretary and her orphaned eleven-year-old niece, Samantha has come to Virginia from California to live with her. Now she is swept up in plots she would like to ignore. The troubled child's best friend disappears and Samantha adopts his Golden retriever who becomes her best friend and confidant. As each faction pressures Susan to side with them, and Susan observes strange behavior among the teachers , she begins to understand she and Samantha are in grave danger. Can she set her hurt pride aside and accept the willing help of Mark, who is now chief of police? Amid murder, violence and kidnapping, Susan must claim her own courage and ability to forgive to save herself and Samantha and choose a promising future.
