- Synopsis
- Home for Amantha Coulter was a farm in upper New York State. Typical of any sixteen-year-old girl living in the eighteen twenties, she had little prospect of seeing much else. Then came the startling opportunity of a paying job in a town the vast distance of twenty miles away. Amantha was torn in two by the allure of a winter on her own and the sorrow of leaving the devoted Thad Fletcher behind. Despite her doubts Amantha went off to Riverbridge on the Erie Canal, where she was to decorate tinware made by the Dover family. To her disappointment, the three Dover girls received her coldly, but soon their cousin Martin appeared, and the winter brightened. Amantha felt disloyal, but she could not help comparing the lively, handsome Martin with sturdy, reliable Thad. She could sense the approaching dilemma of choosing between them. In telling the story of her sensitive heroine, Elizabeth Howard has written a book rich in period detail and filled with warm understanding of young people in love.
