- Synopsis
- Orphaned as a child when her parents are murdered in Africa, Maya is raised in a Yorkshire village by her unloving aunt and uncle who view raising her as their Christian duty. These bleak childhood years are brightened only by Maya's friendship with Emily Roper, a laughing, red-haired girl who is fatally drawn to master Gavin Gaynor, the aristocratic, ne'er-do-well son of Greythorn Hall. Maya has some happy years at a girl's boarding school, but when she returns to her Aunt and Uncle she is unhappy with her grim, uninteresting life with them. Adding to her unhappiness is Emily's misfortune. Emily is pregnant and unmarried, the favorite target of gossip. When Emily mysteriously vanishes, Maya is befriended by Sir Lyndon Gaynor, who appoints her as governess to his nephew. First as governess, then as reluctant fiancée to Gavin, Maya is swept along in the torrent of evil that threatens to engulf the entire Gaynor family--evil that seems somehow connected to "the whispering glade," where, it is rumored, tragic ghosts from the past whisper their secrets to all the doomed Gaynor women. Only on learning the dreadful secret of Emily's disappearance does Maya realize that she must act, and act quickly, to save her own life in this thrilling new novel by an accomplished mistress of romantic suspense.
