- Synopsis
- [from inside flaps] "Emma Hoffsteader, now aged, recalls the summer of 1910 when tragedy touched her life and that of her girlhood friend, Amanda Dorrance. Each summer John and Clare Dorrance moved from their New York mansion to East Hampton accompanied by their beautiful adopted daughter, Amanda, and their twins, Larry and Lucy. At age nineteen, Amanda was by far the favored child of her wealthy father but when she fell in love with Irish barman's son Michael Doyle, Dorrance's affection turned to tyranny. Despite his rage and threats to ruin Michaels father, Amanda and Doyle continued to see each other. Suddenly Dorrance was found stabbed to death in his East Hampton home. Michael had disappeared and a cufflink found at the scene of the crime implicated him as the chief suspect. With so many questions left unanswered, Emma did some investigating of her own and almost lost her life in her search for the truth that fateful summer."
