- Synopsis
- Its booming economy was fueled by the exportation of a unique brandy made from a plant found in its tropical rain forests. But after years of prosperity, the boom collapsed when the brandy lost its unique appeal. An interstellar cartel had found a way to artificially synthesize a brandy that people liked almost as much ... and which cost much less to produce, leaving Lagarto a dark, destitute world overrun by corruption, prostitution, and drugs. Juno is a dirty cop with a difficult past and even more difficult relationships. Born on Lagarto to parents who emigrated from Earth during the planet's boom but arrived after its economy crashed, he is but one of the many Lagartans who live lives of quiet desperation. But it wasn't always like this for Juno. When he was a young cop on the force of capital city Koba's Office of Police, he and his partner worked to break the drug trade. Now his former partner is the beleaguered chief of police, and Juno is a cop on the take, facing a bleak future. Yet despite his past sins and his present problems, some small part of Juno has not given up hope. So when he and a new, beautiful rookie partner are assigned to a particularly ugly murder case, he risks his life, his marriage, and his job to expose a scandal so big it could blow the lid off everything that's wrong with Lagarto. But he's got more pressing problems: a mole who's working to sabotage the department, a short list of leads, and a growing body count that threatens to include his closest friend . . . and himself.
