- Synopsis
- After losing their parents in a car accident four years ago, a pair of sixteen-year-old twins share an abusive relationship that is almost beyond control. Outside the house, the extremely shy girl and her violent brother get by...until the day when she is confronted by a reminder of her old life. She escapes to the only place she feels safe: the elephant habitat at the city zoo. Against all odds, she makes friends with the head zookeeper's son and spends the summer there, hiding from the life she used to know. She bonds with the elephants, who have the tough skin she so desperately yearns for, and a chimp who has been abused. But how long will she be able to outrun the horrors of her past? And will she be able to find the strength to live the life she deserves? Rune Michaels crafts another powerful psychological drama in which the past has an incredible power to influence the present. Questions of identity, trust, and what it means to be exposed punctuate this gripping novel, which ultimately leaves readers with a profound sense of hope.
