- Synopsis
- The term Holocaust, which literally means "a fire that causes total destruction," has been used to describe the mass killing by the Nazis because it was like a great fire burning everything and everyone in its path. No one before Hitler had ever tried to murder an entire group of people. For this reason, his crime has provided our dictionaries with a new word, genocide, meaning "the planned killing of an entire cultural or racial group of people."
