Beggars in Spain is the book-length expansion of Nancy Kress's Nebula awward-winning novela of the same name. (Those who have read the novella can skip the first part of the book and start reading where the novella left off. In a near-future society, a genetic modification has been discovered that eliminates the need for sleep. The Sleepless, as recipients of this modification come to be called, are more productive than other members of society, and tention builds between the majority of society and this new, genetically elite group. Beggars in Spain tells the personal story of Leisha Camden, one of the earliest Sleepless, and the second and third novels in the trilogy, Beggars and Choosers and Beggars Ride, explore the lives of her descendants and the descendants of her society. All three novels are thoughtful, provocative, and exciting all at once, and the hard SF elements are accurate and plausible.
